I was reading a really interesting article about how artists utilise the various mental states that they are in to inspire their work. In some ways the article seemed to normalise the ideas of depression, mental disorders and drugs. Personally, I am not an advocate of experimenting with mental health or states to “enhance” creativity (although to each his own) and so the article unsettled me. However, immediately following, I found this mural piece by artist Keith Haring. The story behind it is poignant and serves as a reminder of the dangers of drug addiction. However, it was nice to see how an artist can take such a negative situation and make good out of it.
From it all, I realised that I am a big fan of creative social advocacy!
